CARD CATALOG

Learning Goals:

- Students will be able to use the card catalog to locate research material in the library.

library

Libraries contain vast amounts of knowledge that can be used for research. As with the Internet, we need to be able to find and use the information available.

In class we will look at how to find books and information using the district's card catalog.

You can also get to the catalog by going to the school web site (www.ci.k12.mn.us), put your mouse over Junior & Senior High and click on Academics. Scroll down on the Academics page and click on CI District Card Catalog.

There are a number of different ways we can search using the card catalog. Just like with a search engine, it is important to use the right keywords and search terms.

Basic Search

Most often we will use the Basic Search. Here we can search by Keyword, Title, Author, and Subject.

We can also search based on Accelerated Reader (AR) Level and Points.

Power Search

The Power search will give us advanced options, filters, and operators.

Visual Search

The Visual search will let us find books based on pictures and categories.

Number Search

A Number search will let you find books based on the call number of the book.

Destiny Quest

The Destiny Quest will show you new books and the top ten most popular books.

The Assignment:

Card Catalog Search

C-I HS Media Center

In our media center or library the fiction books (stories) are located along the wall by the author's last name. The center of the media center contains the reference material and non-fiction books.

The Copyright Page & Call Number

The card catalog will give you the call number of the book, which is found on the spine. This is how you will locate your books. When you find books, you will need to look at the copyright pages to find citation information. What if you need the copyright year and there is more than one listed? Use the most recent date.

Library Rules

- No noise (I should not be able to hear you talking)

- No running

- No goofing around

- Books need to stay on the shelves

The Assignment

Create a new Google Document and title it Card Catalog in the Library. Copy and paste the directions and questions from the link below. Read and follow the directions. Make sure to bold or highlight your answers.

You will find a question, then return to the room and answer it. Rinse and repeat. We want to see how many questions you can finish by the end of the hour. You will start on different numbers so we are not all at the same place.
