Summarizing, Paraphrasing, and Quoting
Learning Goal
- Students will be able to paraphrase, summarize, and quote sources to avoid plagiarism.
There are three main tools we can use to avoid plagiarism. They are summarizing, paraphrasing, and quoting.
Summarizing - Keep the main points, but make it shorter
Quoting - Use the exact words of the author, give them credit
Example: Nelson Mandela said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”
Paraphrasing - Put the idea in your own words, don’t change the meaning
.. Read it, cover it, put it in your own words
.. We will try an activity from this site and check out the acronym to help us paraphrase
.. We will use this site about the SanDiego Zoo to practice paraphrasing in groups
--> In your groups, choose a section you want to paraphrase
--> Use a few devices (Chromebooks or laptops) to divide up the section and paraphrase
In class we will watch this video that explains how to use these techniques.
